HISTORY OF THE PROJECT

EVOLUTION OF THE IDEA

ELIZABETH STANTON GREW UP WITH THE SUPPORT OF PARENTS WHO TOLD HER SHE COULD BE AND DO ANYTHING SHE WANTED. IF SHE WANTED TO PLAY SPORTS, SHE COULD, AND THEY WOULD HELP HER. SHE GREW UP SEEING IMAGES OF PLAYERS ALL AROUND HER. SHE SAW IMAGES OF HERSELF AND TEAMMATES ON THE PAGES OF A NEWSPAPER. THIS WAS ENCOURAGEMENT, VALIDATION, INSPIRATION. THIS WAS NORMAL FOR HER. BUT FOR MANY, GIRLS AND WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD, THIS IS NOT THEIR NORMAL. THEIR NORMAL IS NOT BEING ALLOWED TO PLAY, NOT HAVING THE SUPPORT OF THEIR PARENTS, OR TEACHERS, OR COMMUNITIES, AND NOT SEEING IMAGES OF THEMSELVES OR PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIKE THEM ON THE PAGES OF MAGAZINES, OR ON THE SCREEN. WITH HER BACKGROUND IN JOURNALISM, DOCUMENTARY, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND MEDIA, SHE SET OUT TO START A PROJECT THAT WOULD START TO SHIFT THIS LANDSCAPE.

SHE KNEW THAT GIRLS AND WOMEN WERE PLAYING SPORTS, SHE ALSO KNEW THAT MANY WERE NOT PLAYING.

BUT, SHE THOUGHT, IF YOU COULD SHARE THE STORIES OF THOSE WHO ARE, WITH THE WORLD, MAYBE WE CAN GET THOSE WHO ARE NOT PLAYING, AND THOSE WHO ARE NOT SUPPORTING, TO GET IN THE GAME, AND LET THEIR DAUGHTERS, SISTERS, WIVES, AND MOTHERS, GET IN THE GAME, TOO.

FOR US, THE PROJECT HAS EVOLVED FROM NOT JUST DEMONSTRATING THAT SPORTS ARE A TOOL FOR DEVELOPMENT AND EMPOWERING GIRLS AND WOMEN, BUT PASSING ON THE POWER AND TECHNIQUES FOR SHARING YOUR OWN STORY, AND FOR CREATING A WAY FOR CROSS CULTURAL FINANCIAL AND SOCIAL SUPPORT CAN HAPPEN.

THIS IS THE THROUGH HER EYES PROJECT.

IT BEGAN WITH A SIMPLE IDEA.

WHEN GIRLS AND WOMEN PLAY SPORTS, THEY BECOME EMPOWERED AND REALIZE THEIR STRENGTH AND POWER ON AND OFF THE FIELD. BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE ISN'T SUPPORT FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN TO PLAY? AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE IMAGES OF GIRLS AND WOMEN PLAYING SPORTS AND TALKING ABOUT THEIR POWER AND STRENGTH AREN'T ON DISPLAY IN THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA.

SPORTS HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO BE AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR DEVELOPMENT AND EMPOWERING WOMEN. BUT, A LACK OF SUPPORT AND COVERAGE AND SHARING OF THESE STORIES PERSISTS IN MANY CORNERS OF THE WORLD.

THE FOUNDER ELIZABETH STANTON GREW UP PLAYING SPORTS AND RUNNING HOME EACH WEEK TO SEE IF HER TEAM HAD MADE THE PAGES OF HER LOCAL NEWSPAPER, THE EVANSTON REVIEW. SHE PLAYED THREE SPORTS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND WENT ON TO PLAY SPORTS AT EMORY UNIVERSITY.

AFTER GRADUATION, SHE STARTED HER FIRST JOB AFTER COLLEGE AT THE TICO TIMES, A WEEKLY NEWSPAPER IN SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA. EACH MORNING REPORTERS WOULD REVIEW THE PAPERS TO SEE WHAT HAD HAPPENED OVERNIGHT AND WHAT THE PAPER NEEDED TO COVER. IT WAS RARE TO SEE IMAGES OF WOMEN AND GIRLS PLAYING SPORTS IN THE PAGES. IMAGES OF WOMEN IN BIKINIS AND CAR CRASHES OFTEN TIMES WERE SLASHED ON THE COVER PAGES. FLIPPING THROUGH THE PAGES EACH DAY, SHE BEGAN TO THINK - WHEN WE DON'T SEE IMAGES AND STORIES PORTRAYING POSITIVE ROLE MODELS AND ACTIONS, HOW DOES THIS AFFECT US? HOW DOES IT SHAPE A SOCIETY TO CREATE NORMS?
